Martial Arts School: A Tradition of Tailored Teaching

Historical Overview

Choy Li Fut Kung Fu, like many traditional martial arts, has deep roots in the Shaolin Temple. The teaching methodologies of Choy Li Fut were influenced by the Shaolin Temple’s approach, which categorised students into different levels based on their dedication, skill, and relationship with the master. This structure created a hierarchy that dictated the type and depth of training each student received.

Three Models of Martial Arts Schools

1. Outer Door (外门 - Wàimén):

The "Outer Door" represents the most basic level of instruction, akin to a transaction between a vendor and a customer. In this model, students receive instruction from assistants or junior instructors, never directly from the master. The training is often standardised and formulaic, focusing on the basics and building a large number of competent practitioners quickly. This approach is reminiscent of Choy Li Fut schools during the time of the Boxer Rebellion, where martial arts were taught en masse to create a disciplined and uniform fighting force. The training environment is often large, with students performing repetitive drills in unison, responding to commands barked by an instructor.

2. Inner Door (内门 - Nèimén):

The "Inner Door" represents a deeper level of commitment and trust between the student and the teacher. These students are often more dedicated and are viewed with respect by the teacher. Training at this level is more personalised and may include unique exercises, two-person drills, and apparatus training. The master supervises but delegates much of the teaching to trusted senior students. The atmosphere is more personal, with a focus on refining techniques and building a deeper understanding of the art.

3. Closed Door (闭门 - Bìmén):

The "Closed Door" model is the most personal and advanced form of instruction. Here, the student becomes a disciple, entering into a formal relationship with the master, often solidified through a ceremony called the Bai Shi (拜师). This level of training is highly personalised, with the master directly imparting all aspects of the martial art to the disciple. There are no ranks or grading systems—just a deep, tailored transmission of knowledge. The training is one-on-one or in very small groups, with the master guiding the disciple through the most advanced techniques, forms, and philosophies of the art.

My Teaching Methodology

At our school, we embrace the essence of the "Closed Door" model, focusing on personalised, one-on-one instruction. This approach allows for a deep, tailored transmission of knowledge, respecting the historical roots of Choy Li Fut Kung Fu. Here’s how we implement this methodology:

Personalised Training:

Each student's journey is unique, and our teaching is tailored to fit your individual needs, goals, and pace of learning. Whether you're an international master looking to refine your skills or a dedicated practitioner seeking deeper understanding, we craft your training direction through continuous assessment.

No Group Classes:

We do not offer group classes, as our focus is on providing the highest level of personalised instruction. This ensures that each student receives the full attention and guidance necessary for true mastery.

Direct Learning from the Grandmaster:

In 2009, I was honoured with the title of Grandmaster Instructor by Chan Sun Chiu, the Keeper of Choy Li Fut Kung Fu in China. As a recognised authority, I have the ability to bestow levels, titles, and ranks to deserving Choy Li Fut practitioners. However, the emphasis in our school is not on earning ranks, but on the deep and complete transmission of knowledge.

Commitment to Your Growth:

Your progress is our priority. While independent training outside of our sessions is crucial, I will mentor, guide, and evaluate your development at every step. Whether you choose weekly, bi-weekly, or monthly private lessons, your path to mastery will be carefully managed to ensure continuous growth.

Workshops and Seminars:

While our focus is on private instruction, I also offer international workshops and seminars. These events are an opportunity for practitioners from around the world to experience our methodology, gain insight into advanced techniques, and deepen their understanding of Choy Li Fut Kung Fu.

This tailored approach not only preserves the rich history and traditions of Choy Li Fut Kung Fu but also ensures that each student or instructor who trains with us receives the highest quality instruction, enabling them to reach their fullest potential.
